28.09.12 to 30.09.12: Judo – We Learn to put the “harm” in harmony

“Judo is like a ballet, except there’s no music, no choreography, and the dancers knock each other down.”

Sports teach the strong to know when they are weak and the brave to face themselves when they are afraid; to be proud and unbowed in defeat, and yet humble and gentle in victory; to master ourselves before we attempt to master others; to learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; and to give the predominance of courage over timidity. The main aim of sports champions of QVS lies in this point. They seek to augment their strength, morality and intellect with tireless practice sessions.

Judo is the way to the most effective use of both physical and spiritual strength. By training young players in attacks and defenses it refines body and soul and helps to make the spiritual essence of life a part of very being. Judo is the way to the most effective use of both physical and spiritual strength. By training in attacks and defenses it refines the body and soul and helps to make the spiritual essence of Judo a part of very being. In this way one is able to perfect oneself and contribute something of value to the world.

28.09.12 – Special Assembly: Floods

The overlapping of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over a normally dry land is called flood.

Floods are natural phenomenon characteristics of all rivers. As is known, the rainfall in India is largely dependent on the monsoons. Most of the rainfall is received during June to September, during which heavy spells of rain are often experienced in the catchments of rivers over period of a few days at a time.

Flood damage is the combined result of the natural phenomenon of floods coupled with the human activities. Present estimates indicate that over 2000 people die and over a million homes are destroyed due to floods every year. The floods have a great impact on millions of children. Now-a-days, flood of this scale have the potential to impair children’s emotional, intellectual and physical development which in turn could impair nature’s future.

With the aim of imparting knowledge and to address the problem of floods, the students of Queen’s Valley School of class IV-C presented a special assembly on 28 September,2012 on the topic ‘Floods’. The Assembly comprised of a well rehearsed skit. Our queens were teeming with confidence. There was no place for anxiety or nervousness on the faces of the girls while performing the skit. After skit, the placards displayed messages on what should we do before and during the floods to be safe. The captivating Nature song was presented by the Queens which infused the spirit of helping others and to be eco-friendly. Each Queen showed her dedication. It was an exciting and learning experience for our Queens. They successfully learnt and enjoyed.

25.09.12 – Mock Drill on Fire Safety

“Fire is a good servant but a bad master”

We all know that fire is a useful resource. It is used for various house and industrial purposes. It is good and useful, when it is under control but we see its dangerous side when it is uncontrolled. Therefore, fire should always be a servant to us. However, fire accidents caused by human error can’t be pre-controlled. Therefore, we, at QVS, organized a mock drill on ‘Fire Safety’ on 25th September’2012 conducted by Delhi fire services. The aim of this mock drill was to make our Queens aware about the steps that can be taken for fire prevention and escape in case of fire.

Queens were told that in fire fighting, fires are classified on the basis of combustible fuel. Queens were told about three kinds of fire- solid fire, liquid fire, and electrical fire. Solid fire combusts when some solid flammable material like coal, wood, rubber becomes heated to its ignition point. Liquid fire combusts due to liquid flammable material like kerosene, petroleum etc. Electrical fire involves potentially energized electrical equipment. This sort of fire may be caused by short-circuiting machinery or overloaded electrical cables.

Queens were told that fire alarm systems should be maintained for detection and warning of fire. They were told that placing and maintaining correct type of fire extinguishers in easily accessible places is a key element of fire safety rule, like, fire extinguishers that smother the fire with foam should be used for extinguishing solid fire. For liquid fire, a solid steam of water should never be used because it can cause the fuel to scatter, spreading the flames. A carbon dioxide based fire extinguisher and dry chemical powder extinguisher should be used for electrical fire.

The mock drill was very informative. It would help our Queens to a face a fire emergency anywhere. Queens were also motivated to share this information at home and in society to spread awareness.

25.09.12 – Healthy Handwash

‘Farewell to filth, Hello to health’

A delicious mud pie, a good luck rock, or a friendly frog are the types of goodies kids love to bring home. But these adorable gifts can also bring millions of germs with them.

Good hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses such as meningitis, bronchitis, influenza, hepatitis A and most types of infectious diarrhoea.

Dettol, the 77 years old brand from the stable of Reckitt Benckiser, has started a year long campaign to promote healthy habits amongst school children in the country. As part of this health experts visited QUEEN’ S VALLEY SCHOOL on 25th Sept. 2012 and organized workshops to educate the students on proper ways of hand washing.

The importance of correct hand hygiene in limiting the transmission of micro organisms, in the health care was well documented and explained to lil’ queens.

To encourage effective hand washing at killing germs, the steps for healthy hand wash were told .viz.
  • Wet your hands.
  • Add soap and then rub your hands together making a soapy lather.
  • Wash the front and back of your hands, as well as between your fingers and under nails.
  • Rinse your hands with water.
  • Wipe and dry hands well with a clean towel.
  • Turn off the water.

The Queens were motivated to follow the steps and were presented with complimentary bottles of Dettol Liquid Handwash and hence be healthy!

Vighnaharta Siddhivinayak Lord Ganesha known as the protector who protects us from all hindrances. He has got a stand in all kind of rituals. No ritual begins without his worship.

“Ganesh Chaturthi” also known as “Vinayaka Chaturthi” is a festival celebrated on the occasion of birthday of Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati, who is believed to bestow his presence on Earth for all his devotees for the duration of this festival. It is the day Shiva declared his son Ganesha as superior to all the gods, barring his parents.

15.09.12 – Effective Teaching

‘A good teacher is not the one who teaches maximum number of students but is the one who creates maximum number of masters.’

Role of a teacher in the life of a student is very crucial. The role of a teacher now a days is not limited to teaching but has extended to various other spheres of a students’ life. Students look up to their teacher and sometimes covertly imbibe the value system and behavioural habits displayed by a teacher. There is a great need for child behavior to ensure 360 degree growth.

For this purpose a workshop on “Effective Teaching” was organized by Queen’s Valley School for its teachers on September 15, 2012 which was taken up by a very eminent psychologist Ms. Anu Singh, who has also been working with NIE for past many years. The resource person emphasized on the fact that a teacher should be a role model, guide, philosopher, friend and most of all approachable, so that the students can easily and comfortably share their problems with their teachers .

A teacher should empathise with her students. She should put herself in the shoes of the students before reprimanding or scolding them in front of the entire class.

A teacher should use positive reinforcement and should devise a healthy way to punish a child instead of using corporal punishment. Ms. Anu Singh also discussed that how a teacher can explain sensitive issues like sex education and child abuse. A teacher can play a very important role in addressing these issues with children. The teacher should be able to make them feel comfortable so that they can come up with their problems without hesitation.

In the workshop the nature of nuclear families was also discussed. Working parents have very little time to spend with their children. They are left alone at home. That’s why the role of a teacher becomes all the more important. The teacher has an all encompassing role in the current environment.

14.09.12 – Special Assembly on Chemical Disaster

CHEMICAL DISASTER means “chemical accident” or “chemical incident” which refer to an event resulting in the release of a substance or substances hazardous to human health and the environment in the short or long term. Such events include fires, explosions, leakages or releases of toxic or hazardous materials that can cause people illness, injury, disability or death.

In the modern day world with the development of science and technology, the usage of chemicals has increased to a large extent for increasing our crop production, purifying our drinking water, painting beautiful homes etc.

Manufacturing of chemicals is a major source of contamination through hazardous materials, but there are many other, including service stations, hospitals, and hazardous materials waste sites. Hazardous material are most often released as a result of transportation accidents, lack of proper storage, use of disposal or because of chemical accidents in plants. Further, Chemical Weapons of Mass Destruction are difficult to detect, as most of the chemical WMD are colourless and odourless.

We and our community are at risk if a chemical is used without following safety precautions or released in harmful amounts into the environment where we live, work or play.

To promote awareness and interest among the students of Queen’s Valley School and the community. The students of class VIII C & D conducted an assembly on 14.09.12 on the issue of Chemical Disasters. They performed a skit in which they dramatized the various effect of chemical disaster. They showcased the most significant Chemical Disasters of India that was the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984, where high toxic gas was released into the air and killed more than 3000 people. Through the skit they tried to explain the situation which was faced by those people who were working in that industry or people residing in the neighboring areas.

The students participated with great zeal and enthusiasm & their effort to educate the students was well appreciated.

12.09.2012: Inter House Table Tennis Match

“Table Tennis is like an atom. To the ignorant it is merely microscopic and insignificant in existence, but to the dedicated, it is intricate in design and the building block to everything we know.”
- Matt Hetherington

'A sound mind in a sound body' is an expression so familiar and so often quoted that its meaning is likely to have lost something of its edge and appeal. Children have a natural inclination for sports and they derive exercise from them in an agreeable way, without specially exerting themselves. They return to their studies, feeling refreshed and energetic.

Sports also inculcate valuable qualities in young people. They learn to play the game, practicing fair play and showing generosity towards their opponents. In other words, they cultivate the quality of sportsmanship, which consists in playing a game according to its rules and accepting defeat with good temper.

Table Tennis, also known as Ping-Pong, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth using rackets. Table tennis is an indoor, non-seasonal sport. It can be played all year round, day or night, and one needs not worry about bad weather or covering up to keep those harmful UV rays off .

Table Tennis is good for children’s health - it's great for working up a sweat and getting the heart rate up. Played at the higher levels, it's one of the fastest sports around. Just a couple of hours a week hitting that little orange ball around can do wonders for fitness.

It's easy on the body. One can play Ping-Pong or say Table Tennis according to his own capabilities and limitations, and still be competitive. And being a non-contact sport, one doesn’t have to worry about those bruises or even broken bones that are a part of contact sports.

Endorsing a sports friendly environment in order to inculcate all possible qualities in our students, QVS relentlessly endeavours to build up a strong pedestal for our upcoming sports champions. On 12th of September an inter house table tennis competition was organised in the school premises wherein the participants hit the ball hard to excel each other maintaining the true spirit of sports. The spectators witnessed an enthralling performance as their heads moved in a pendulum motion along with the to and fro movement of the ball.

Conducted in the Sports Hall the event was full of excitement as every minute and every second the scores spoke of great competition. Speed, toil and focus were indeed visible as an integral part of the ongoing competition. The following champions ruled the winning moment

07.09.12 – Time Management Workshop

“A low score indicates a need for help with time management and a high score indicates use of effective time management.”

Time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity. Time management may be aided by a range of skills, tools, and techniques used to manage time when accomplishing specific tasks, projects and goals complying with a due date. This set encompasses a wide scope of activities, and these include planning, allocating, setting goals, delegation, analysis of time spent, monitoring, organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing. Initially, time management referred to just business or work activities, but eventually the term broadened to include personal activities as well. A time management system is a designed combination of processes, tools, techniques, and methods. Usually time management is a necessity in any project development as it determines the project completion time and scope.

At QVS we aim at imparting knowledge which helps the students in their growth and personal development. In order to promote this awareness in its Queens, Queen's Valley School conducted a workshop on TIME MANAGEMENT on 07th September, 2012 so as to support children in their quest for their better development.

The workshop enlightened the students with a famous quote,” You will never “find” time for anything. If you want time you must make it.” Time management strategies are often associated with the recommendation to set personal goals. One should work in priority order and with these words the guest of honor Ms. Anu Singh (working with Times of India) introduced the subject. She followed with the meaning and significance of managing time. Students of class X and XI attended the workshop. Ms Singh’s words were persuasive and managed to grab the thoughts and attention of the Queens by making them eager to learn more about time management and to certainly work on it. Ms. Singh stressed strongly on the fact that at this stage of life, managing time is very important. This can be done with the help of ABC analysis.

This analysis was discussed with the students in which all tasks are divided into three groups. These groups are often marked A, B, and C—hence the name. Activities are ranked upon these general criteria:

A – Tasks that are perceived as being urgent and important,

B – Tasks that are important but not urgent,

C – Tasks those are neither urgent nor important.

Imbuded with this message Ms. Singh concluded that Time management for students is a really important aspect of succeeding in life. If you want to achieve success then you need to tame time from the outset.

The queens of QVS participated with great zeal and enthusiasm. The workshop ended with an overwhelming response from the students as they pledged to always follow time management techniques to manage their time. The workshop was an enriching experience for the students as well as the teachers.

07.09.12 – Workshop by DDMA South West

Preparation of School Disaster Management Plan was the topic for the one day training programme conducted by the Directorate of Education South West in collaboration with District Disaster Management Authority. The resource person was Mr Santosh Thomas Assistant Director, Ministry of Home Affairs.

The goal of the Disaster Risk Management Programme is sustainable reduction in natural disaster risks in some of the most hazard prone districts in selected states if India. So far 17 states and 176 districts have come under the ambit of this programme. The programme has now been renamed as Disaster Risk Reduction Programme.

Mr. Thomas divided the working of the programme in two phases –
  • Pre Disaster which involves Awareness, Capacity building and Training.
  • Post Disaster which involves Response to disaster.

The aim of this sensitisation programme in schools is to spread awareness in the community through school children about how to prepare for and respond to disasters. The dissemination of information of students in their homes will lead to better preparedness in society. Awareness and preparedness is required in schools as they are the most densely populated areas hence the most vulnerable.

Aim of the preparation of the School Disaster Management Plan is to ensure the safety and security of the staff and students and to use the students to spread awareness in their families.

The Disaster Management Cycle consists of the following steps

Pre Disaster
a) Preparedness
b) Mitigation
c) Prevention
d) Development

Post Disaster
a) Response
b) Rehabilitation
c) Reconstruction
d) Development

The reconstruction phase is important as here it is possible to remove weaknesses in new buildings in case of building collapse. The development phase is important to remove the problems faced.

A few tips given by the resource person which can be incorporated in our lives are:

a) Fire Extinguishers should be checked for their expiry dates and can be used to give training to staff and students before being replaced. They have to be replaced any way so it is better to train than to let the resource be wasted.

b) All important documents should be scanned and put on one’s mail.

c) Make a disaster relief bag which must contain cash, water, a torch and all important documents.

d) In case someone lives in a high rise building they must count the number of steps to the ground floor in case of evacuation at night.

e) In institutions where there is only one exit should have knotted ropes for evacuation.

f) In case of schools having only one staircase additional metal spiral staircases should be added.

g) All heavy furniture and cupboards should be retro fitted to avoid injury due to their fall in case of earthquakes.

h) Not to make structural changes just to increase space for parking or otherwise. Earthquakes don’t kill it is the builders who are responsible for building collapses.

i) Don’t hang painting/pictures/mirrors above the bed. It may fall on one’s head during an earthquake.

05.09.12 – Teacher’s Day Celebration

Since times immemorial, Indians have respected their teachers. The ancient 'Guru' has now become modern 'Sir' or 'Madam'. Nonetheless, the role of teachers has remained the same and so has the affection and reverence of the students towards their teachers. The recent celebration of teachers’ day at Queen’s Valley School clearly gave a picture of the same.

The Queens of Class X presented an entertaining cultural programme to express their gratitude towards their teachers and entertain them. The students put up a string of performances beginning with a Prayer, songs and dances in praise of their teachers. Students danced on the song “Yeh Zindagi Raftaar Se Chale.” The sensational dance performances were followed by a monologue on the difference a teacher can bring in a child’s life.

The play displayed how teachers become a support system in the life of their students at academic, professional and personal levels. “Azma Luck Azma” was sung by one of the queens of QVS. Another dance performance on the song “Tu Hai To I’ll Be All Right” was given by the students. The queens recited a poem with the title ‘You Have Made a Difference’ in the honour of teachers.

To celebrate the day with more fun, student teachers maintained proper discipline to lend a helping hand to their teachers. All the teachers were given interesting titles by their Queens. Various games were also organised. The programme was followed by lunch for the staff.

Teachers’ Day has always been special for students as well as their parents. On this day, every year, students pay to their teachers in their own way which makes it a day of great importance. In the words of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam,

“Teachers’ Day is very important for all our people, for our students and even for all the parents as the teachers lay the foundation for creating enlightened citizens for the nation.”

04.09.2012: Student Council Election

“Democracy is a form of government of the people, by the people and for the people”.

Democracy is a system of government in which people choose their representatives and participate in the functioning of the government. In order to acquaint the students with the idea of democracy Queen’s Valley School conducted elections for its Students’ Council.

Students are taught the idea of democratic functioning of the government, elections etc., through books but gaining a practical idea is always beneficial. Although elections are held in classes for electing class monitors but elections in school to elect the ‘Students’ Council’ provides more exposure.
