22.12.16: KNOW THY AUTHOR/ POET- DUMB CHARADE COMPETITION

“Only the very weak-minded refuse to be influenced by literature and poetry.”
- Cassandra Clarke

Literature is a vital component of all languages. It provides pleasure and experience to its readers and listeners. It is not onlyrelaxing but also helps to develop enthusiastic readers and improves achievement among students. Young learners can expand their horizons through vicarious experiences gained by reading books. They are also provided with a language model for the correct usage of the language. Thus, it supports all areas of the curriculum. The children get the opportunity to hone their listening skills, develop thinking skills and express their thoughts, feelings and reactions. Hence, one can say it’s the foundation of life.

Keeping in view the importance of reading books for recreational purposes and to check the awareness of our students about the famous authors and poets in the English language, a dumb charade competition was organised for the Queens of class V on 22 December 2016, Thursday in the Cultural Hall. The motive being to allow students to express the name of the author/ poet through actions depicting some famous character, novel, story, theme or poem, so that other members of their team could guess the name right. A team of five members was selected in the preliminary round from each class based on their expression, knowledge and awareness about the different authors and poets. It was a treat to watch young Queens expressing the name of the author/ poet without uttering a word and making use of only expressions for the same. 07.12.16: AD LIBITUM EXPRESSION: EXTEMPORE COMPETITION

An extempore, as a stage performance carried out without preparation or forethought employs effective application of the technique of stream of consciousness and calculated expression.

In order to create impressive speakers by developing the essentials of public speaking, Queen’s Valley School organisedAd Libitum Expression,an interclass extempore competition for students of class XI and XII on December 07, 2016. The event was aimed at triggering the creative skills of learners by spontaneously providing them with a plethora of thought provoking topics from the domains of education, psychology and environment, to social, ethical and visionary. The choice of topics was made taking into account the interest, learnability and feasibility of learners while sensitising them about the immediate environment and developing language skills. At the same time, it was an endeavour to encourage the students to indulge in the observation and analysis of the challenging issues they were presented with and to voice their ideas with precision.

To create a substantial level of connectivity with the audience, the speakers also engaged in a constructive discussion with them and thus enabled multiplicity of opinion to prevail.

05.12.16: INTER CLASS SPELL BEE COMPETITION

“An investment in spellings pays the best interest.”
- Benjamin Franklin

Spellings help lay the basic foundation that a child needs throughout his education and life. Spelling is important because it aids in reading. It helps cement the connection that is shared between sounds and letters. The Spell Check Competition not only provides a valuable educational experience for the child, but also allows them to engage in healthy competition. As Linda Wood, an ex-judge at Scripps Spelling Bee highlighted, spelling competitions do not merely involve rote learning of words. Rather, preparation for a competition is a comprehensive learning process that allows thechild to learn the definition, pronunciation, and roots of the word.

The spelling competitions allow children to develop a range of cognitive skills including the ability to handle pressure. The learning process accompanying the spelling bee is likely to enhance the child's memory and allow the child to develop better learning skills, which can prove to be highly beneficial during higher education.A child's confidence level is usually boosted after entering into such competitions. So, keeping this in mind an Inter Class Spell Check Competition was organized in school on 9th December2016. Initially, a prelim round was conducted on 5th December 2016 and accordingly students from each section were selected for the final round. Selected students were given a topic ‘Natural Disasters’. A questionnaire was prepared, in which different questions (Jumbled Words, Tick the correct spellings, Insert the missing letters etc) related to the topic were asked.

Our Queens participated with great zeal an enthusiasm. The event acted as a confident booster for them. It enhanced their skills and gave them a chance to showcase their talent and knowledge.
